I thought I would start updating this blog for Ken’s current
hospital stay. Not that we don’t enjoy calls and visitors, but this is a way to
get the word out in one single blast.
I just got back to our favorite floor at UWMC – 7NE. I made
a mad dash home and back to grab my laptop, supplies, meds, clothes, food,
C-pap, etc etc. I had several offers for someone to bring things, but the list
was very long. The timing worked out well as Ken has been down for an MRI for
the last 2+ hours. The nurse tells me it was very difficult to get him transferred
from the bed to the gurney. With his back pain, no feeling from his toes to his
hips, it makes standing impossible and any movement causes a spasm. They were
going to have to give him general anesthesia to get him thru the test. Happy
pills were not going to be enough to keep his claustrophobia and spasms under
control.
Once the results are back, the neurology team and spine
doctor will be able to determine a course of treatment. Once the cause is
figured out and “fixed”(?) he will still need lots of physical therapy and occupational
therapy.
Now that I have my laptop, I hope to be able to keep up with
my work. It is something productive to do when Ken is sleeping from the pain
meds instead of me doing Sudoku puzzles (although I just bought a new book at
the gift shop). I also had to buy another UWMC t-shirt to sleep in last night.
There is a good idea for the hospital guild to raise money by having a better
selection of shirts, flannel pants, even underwear, for caregivers that want to
stay with their patients. I had my choice of one t-shirt!
I’ll get logged on to work now and let you know when we have
any answers.
Sydnie
